As the school year begins, just a friendly reminder from the special education law team at RRM to keep an eye on the sky. Some students with disabilities may require additional supports, aids, or modifications when there are air quality alerts, excessive heat warnings, high pollen count, or other environmental or weather conditions that affect their ability to go outside, attend school, or otherwise participate in their educational programming. Where appropriate, Section 504 plans, IEPs, and other educational programming documents, should include language addressing the student’s medical needs, including needs related to environmental conditions. Make sure the language used is specific, understandable, and realistic– say what you mean and mean what you say. Wishing everyone clear skies and smooth sailing as back-to-school approaches.
